Vote for Hillary in the Primary Election (ASL)

Transcript: If you want Hillary to become the next president, it is very important for you to vote for her. There are two different elections. The first one is the primary and the second one is the general. The primary election is this spring while the general election will happen in November. In the Democratic primary, Democratic candidates run against each other. In the Republican primary, Republican candidates run against each other. Democratic and Republican winners in the primaries will run against each other in the general election. The primary election is truly important because in order to see Hillary run against the Republican candidate and go to the White House, she must win the primary election first. Did you know that there are different types of primary elections? They vary among the states. They also happen at different times. Some primaries are open while others are closed. What is the difference between open and closed primaries? In the open primaries, you do not have to be registered as a Democrat to vote in the Democratic primaries. You can be a Democrat, Republican, or not affiliated with any party and still vote in the Democratic primaries as long as you do not vote in other parties’ primaries. In the closed primaries, you have to be registered as a Democrat in order to vote in the Democratic primaries. If you are registered as a Republican or not affiliated with any party, you cannot vote for Hillary in closed Democratic primaries. Some other states have semi-closed primaries. What are they? In semi-closed primaries, you must be either registered as a Democrat or unaffiliated with any party to vote in the Democratic primaries. You cannot be registered as a Republican and still vote in semi-closed Democratic primaries. Some other states have caucuses instead of primaries. They are similar to the primaries. Instead of having voters cast secret ballots, voters have to attend a meeting and vote publicly, such as by raising their hands. Both caucuses and primaries have the same purpose of choosing party nominees. You may be concerned about not being able to vote because you will be out of state or cannot miss work during the primaries, but you should not worry. There is the absentee ballot option. You have to let the state know in advance of time that you will not be able to vote in person and they will mail an absentee ballot to wherever you are. You can submit your ballot and mail it back to them. You can vote early sometimes. Thanks to the absentee ballot, you will not have to miss voting during the primaries. You can get more information about this option online. As you see that every state has a different primary process or date, you may be unsure about details related to your state and wonder which process your state has, whether it has open or closed primaries or caucuses. I will have different people do vlogs about their states’ primaries and explain details about them. After watching your state’s vlog, you should have a better idea of how your state primary works and know what you have to do in order to vote.
